Aerospace facilities are among the most high-tech plants in manufacturing; as such, they require an efficient, effective wastewater treatment system. But like many organizations, even industry leaders can find it difficult to make wastewater treatment a priority due to the many processes involved in aerospace manufacturing.
One southern California plant that is a supplier for Boeing – a huge name in aerospace – had problems with its 25-year-old wastewater treatment system. The original system featured some automation but corrosion had greatly reduced its functionality over the years. Cadmium cyanide, a common contaminant in wastewater from aerospace and military manufacturers, had proven difficult to eliminate and several wastewater treatment providers declined to take on the challenge. Additionally, the company found it difficult to meet discharge limits due to high levels of dissolved metals. When regulators lowered discharge levels, the manufacturer was forced to take action.
A Full System Replacement
When the company initially met with DMP Corporation, it hoped to get by with just a few upgrades to its existing equipment. As with all their clients, DMP examined the facility, analyzed influent and effluent streams, spoke with the manufacturer’s experts and suggested several potential upgrades. However, to truly address the manufacturer’s issues, and to ensure the company could address potential issues in the future, DMP suggested another solution – a complete overhaul of the wastewater treatment system.
Rather than making generic upgrades, the manufacturer received management approval for the overhaul, which included new automation, ion exchange and recipe batch controls for treating concentrated wastes. DMP also installed the technology necessary for water recycle, allowing the company to dodge the water shortage that has plagued its region. Cadmium cyanide removal was part of the new process, since DMP has experience with its removal in the aerospace manufacturing industry.
Foundations for Successful Collaboration
The manufacturer was impressed with DMP’s service, including our extensive knowledge of the industry, answers to every question and solutions for every problem. Moreover, we were timely in our response. The manufacturer felt DMP was invested in its needs and prepared to deliver results.
With the new system installation, the aerospace manufacturer expects to meet its discharge limits, recycle more water to limit dependence on outside sources, reduce operating costs, and make wastewater treatment more efficient and less disruptive to operations. Part of DMP’s guarantee is to provide continual service as needed through remote monitoring and chemical delivery. As the manufacturer’s new system is installed and implemented, DMP will be there every step of the way.
