Wastewater encompasses a broad category of polluted water produced by residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. Contaminants, debris, and other waste can be removed from this water by applying a variety of biological, physical, or chemical treatments and filtration methods to make the water safe for reuse. If the water isn’t reused, wastewater treatment facilities may release properly treated water into sewage systems or as surface water.
Many industrial processes produce wastewater as a byproduct of fluid systems, chemical processing, and manufacturing processes, but a growing focus on sustainability and waste reduction has driven the development of innovative solutions for treating wastewater for the industrial sector.
Many industrial stakeholders are now seeking solutions that reduce the amount of wastewater they produce or clean wastewater before it leaves the facility. Market experts expect the global wastewater treatment industry to be worth $17.74 billion by 2026.
Understanding the Wastewater Treatment Process
Wastewater integrators handle the total process of wastewater management from the release of wastewater by initial use sites through safe reintroduction into water or sewer systems. Treatment processes include the use of biological treatment, pH neutralization, chemical and physical separation techniques, and extensive filtration processes.
Some of the steps wastewater integrators may take during treatment of industrial wastewater include:
Controlling odors. Increased urbanization and an uptick in the proximity of industrial processing facilities to population centers have created an emphasis on odor control. Integrators can create water treatment processes that contain wastewater odors and cleanse the water of both contaminants and smells.
Disinfecting and sterilizing water. Before water can be reused or reintroduced into the water system, it needs to be thoroughly stripped of dangerous contaminants and chemicals. Wastewater integrators disinfect, oxidize, and sterilize water to make it safe for reuse or disposal.
Documenting treatment steps, performance, and regulatory compliance. A quality wastewater integrator will back up their services with documentation so facilities can present evidence of wastewater management to regulatory organizations and their parent organizations. This documentation includes maintenance and service logs, operator training, and simulation testing.
Monitoring wastewater treatment systems. Integrators monitor in-house and off-site treatment systems to ensure they are operating within their parameters. Different wastewater integrators may use networks of PLCs, operator terminals, or both.
Pretreating water before sewer disposal. Rather than reusing water, many facilities prefer to release treated wastewater to municipal sewer systems. As wastewater management focuses on residential and commercial sectors, this trend will continue to increase. Wastewater integrators can implement systems that pretreat the water to make it safe for sewer disposal. Failing to properly treat water can result in regulatory violations, liability concerns, and environmental hazards.
Solutions for Diverse Industries
Nearly every industry needs comprehensive wastewater management to protect the environment, conserve water, and extend the life of industrial processing equipment. DMP Corporation serves a wide variety of industries, and our team of engineers tailors every wastewater treatment solution to match the unique requirements of each industry.
We have worked with companies in the following industries to provide premium wastewater management solutions:
Aerospace and Defense
Aerospace manufacturing processes create uniquely toxic water conditions, especially in plants that produce goods with cyanide cadmium. DMP specializes in creating decontamination systems that address contaminants common in aerospace and defense applications. Our systems address challenges such as:
Cyanide and cyanide/cadmium removal
Heavy metal removal
Water separation from sludge
Wastewater treatment automation/controls
DMP creates wastewater treatment tools that adhere to strict federal, state, and local regulations governing the automotive sector. Our solutions remove or destroy:
Greases, oils, and other lubricants
Dirt and grime
Chemical manufacturing can be particularly hazardous, and hazardous chemicals can contaminate the water at every stage of production if improperly used or handled. Each chemical processing facility is different due to the nature of chemicals they use and the total amount of processing that occurs. DMP creates custom solutions that best match each facility’s chemical load and can fully answer regulatory demands.
Food and Beverage
Food and beverage processing poses contamination risks involving chemicals, microbes, biotoxins, and more. At DMP, we create and install custom wastewater solutions that address a variety of specific food and beverage challenges, such as:
Dairy processing. Our dairy processes will help your facility work within the local POTW constraints and optimize sludge disposal.
Meat processing. DMP’s meat processing wastewater solutions include a five-year renewable program and a water audit to ensure that nutrients and proteins are being scrubbed from your facility’s wastewater before it enters the municipal sewer system.
Snack food production. Our wastewater solutions can handle varying levels and types of contamination to manage all snack foods produced at your facility. These systems can treat the water for suspended solids, fats, oils, grease, and suspended and dissolved organics.
Craft Breweries. Effluent water produced by breweries contains bacteria and nutrient pollution which many municipal treatment plants can’t handle. We provide on-site wastewater management tools to handle contaminants from each malting, mashing, boiling and fermenting stage. We also offer equalization tanks with low pH levels to counterbalance acidic process wastewater.
Metal Plating and Finishing
Heavy metals, oils, and suspended solids contaminate the water during metal finishing processes. DMP has created processes that remove these impurities to stay compliant with regulatory oversight. For example, we have developed dewatering processes to efficiently separate water and sludge.

Water Recycling and Reuse
More than 20% of global industrial water is used by manufacturers. With water shortages in many parts of the world, it’s essential that industrial users find ways to recycle and reuse water in their processes. DMP offers in-house contaminant removal to facilitate the reuse of wastewater already contained within and produced by manufacturing processes.
Zero liquid discharge (ZLD). ZLD removes all contaminants from wastewater and reduces them into a solid form of waste for easier and safer disposal. DMP can help users achieve ZLD by chaining together multiple water treatment technologies that progressively concentrate contaminants and remove them from the process. ZLD methods often recover materials for use in other facility applications, such as ammonium sulfate for fertilizer or sodium chloride for melting ice.
Reverse osmosis (RO). Reverse osmosis uses a composite film or other membrane to filter pressurized water to recover as much as 90% of water that would otherwise be sent into the sewage system. The pretreatment used for these processes also protects the filters from fouling, scaling, and degradation caused by organic agents, minerals, and chemicals.
Deionization/ion exchange. Using ion exchange resin columns, the deionization process filters water through a resin bed. Harmless ions, such as hydrogen or hydroxyl, are exchanged with contaminant ions in the wastewater, ultimately producing cleaner and reusable water.
